OUR HISTORY

Chan Heung developed his own style of Kung Fu, combining the teachings of his uncle Chan Yuen Gong, Lee Yau San and the monk Choy Fook. Rather than selfishly calling his style Chan Gar Kung Fu, he named it Choy Lee Fut. Choy in honour of the monk Choy Fook, Lee in honour of Lee Yau San and Fut, meaning Buddha, to commemorate the Buddhist origins of the art since all three of his mentors could trace their lineage back to the Shaolin Temple..

THE CHOY LEE FUT SYSTEM

The Choy Lee Fut system is composed of seven areas of study. Kung Fu is the practice of external strength in the classic tradition of the martial arts. Complementing this is the Lohan Qigong system which develops inner strength of mind and body. In addition to these two disciplines, Choy Lee Fut incorporates traditional medical practices such as acupuncture and massage.

TRADITIONAL FIST FORMS

Fist forms or empty hand forms, forms without weapons, teach techniques such as striking, animal aspects, grappling and more importantly stance work. Learning these forms enables a Choy Lee Fut practitioner to fully utilise all power generated. This happens by using; stancework for stability, the knees, waist and shoulders for power, arms and legs to attack defend and lock, which coordinates the body into one effective unit.

PHILOSOPHY

Ultimately the success of a student is not determined by his or her external abilities, (strength, speed, flexibility, etc.,) but rather by the student’s morality and character. This is known as Muduk. The Chinese have a saying “A student will spend years looking for a good teacher, and a teacher will test a student for years .”

Choy Lee Fut weapons are divided into several categories. These are long range, mid range and close range. This is further subdivided into hard, soft, heavy, light, flexible, double and combinations of weapons.

FIGHTING TECHNIQUES AND BAGWORK

Bagwork and sparring teaches a student how to use all parts of the body from hands, forearms, elbows, feet, shins and knees. It also focuses on: attack and defense; angles of attacks and defending; changing planes or levels; head movement; footwork; body movement and efficiency; conditioning of hands, arms, feet and legs; increasing tempo or speed; accuracy; stamina; strength and power; reaction and timing; deflection and counterattacking; trapping and takedowns; short and long attacks; bridging distance and above all reinforcement of techniques.

DUMMIES

The Choy Lee Fut system has 18 different dummy sets. Each dummy set trains specific techniques or is used to condition certain parts of the body. This ranges from wooden dummies, sand bag dummies and even weapon dummies.

KUM NA GRAPPLING

Kum Na in Cantonese or Chin Na in Mandarin is the art of trapping, joint locking or manipulating the joints. There are several degrees of Kum Na. These techniques invariably begin with bridging using the “Kiu Sou or forearm”, leading to trapping of the limbs. Techniques implemented can lead to either neutralising an opponent or in more extreme cases ending in dislocation or the tearing of tendons from the bone depending on the technique or force applied.

WE ARE CHOY LEE FUT PENNANT HILLS

Choy Lee Fut Pennant Hills (previously known as Choy Lee Fut Cherrybrook) has been operating continuosly since 1991 and is one of the longest established Choy Lee Fut groups operating outside the Main headquarters in Sydney, Australia. It was established by Sifu Lane Louie. He is assisted by Sifu Jeremy Louie. Sifu Jeremy has studied Choy Lee Fut since the age of 4 and has taught kung fu for over 20 years. He has competed in martial art competitions nationally and internationally achieiving world champion in kung fu forms in Santiago, Chile in 2004. The Pennant Hills Choy Lee Fut Group relocated to its current position on June 14th 2008.
